Directory of Early Photographers in Cambridgeshire, Studio Notes, Photographic Convention of the United Kingdom 1897

The Photographic Convention of the United Kingdom held its 1897 gathering in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, from 12th to 17th July. Eminent participants included Henry Peach Robinson, P H Emerson, T R Dallmeyer and Alfred Seaman. Both amateurs and professionals attended, and a number of East Anglian studio photographers played an active part in the proceedings.

Involvement of East Anglian professional photographers:

Norfolk

W J Denew, 10 Regent Street, Yarmouth. He made his dark room available to members of the convention (BJP), and he appears in a group photograph taken by F H Sayers.

R W Howes, East Dereham. He supplied ‘specimens of enlarging work’ for the trade exhibition.

Alfred Price, Yarmouth. He had probably retired from the business by this date, but, along with F H Sayers, his successor, he served as group photographer for the occasion. He also submitted architectural photographs for the pictorial exhibition and led an excursion to Castle Acre on 16th July.

F H Sayers, Yarmouth. He acted, with Alfred Price, as group photographer for the occasion, exhibited some figure studies, and made his dark room available to members. (Mention of the studio under his name suggests that he had succeeded Price at 26 King Street by this date.)

G W Sherman, Regent Road, Yarmouth. He made his darkroom available to members.

Tilley Brothers, 92 Regent Street Yarmouth. They made their darkroom available to members. (This gives an earlier date for their studio than previously discovered.) They also contributed photographs to the pictorial exhibition. Percy Tilley appears in a group photograph taken by F H Sayers.

Suffolk

J Palmer Clarke, Bury St Edmunds. He appears in a group photograph taken by F H Sayers, and he submitted architectural photographs for the pictorial exhibition .

H Jenkins, 2 Pier Terrace, Lowestoft. He made his dark room available to members.

A Young, Wellington Road, South Lowestoft. He made his dark room available to members.

Cambridgeshire

Mr Sanderson, Cambridge. (This is presumably F H Sanderson of Bridge Street.) He showed – and gave members the opportunity to test – his ‘universal swing front camera, to which we referred favourably a few weeks ago’. His camera was being marketed by Houghton & Co of London, on whose behalf Sanderson also exhibited ‘Maloni’s flashlight apparatus’.
