Directory of Early Photographers in Cambridgeshire A - C

ABLETT, Walter

17 Trafalgar Street, Cambridge
CAD1909/10

ANONYMOUS

Adamson records that the county's first licensed daguerreotype studio opened in St Mary's Passage, Cambridge, August 1844. The name of the photographer is not known. For the first identified licensee in the county, see William Nichols.

ARNSBY, William John

Almshouse Street, Whittlesey
KC1900, KC1904

ART STUDIO

See J J Wright.

AUSTIN, Frank

Broad Street, March
KC1912

BAKER, Kidd &

SC1907, KC1908, CAD1909/10, SC1910, SC1911, KC1912, SC1912, SC1913, SC1914, SC1915, KC1916, AC1916, SC1916/17, SC1919/20

BAKER,Smith E W

18 Mill Road, Cambridge
KC1916

BALDING, Alfred

Lynn Road, Wisbech
KC1869

In HC1873 Balding appears in the High Street, Wisbech, as bookseller, stationer, printer and publisher of the ‘Mirror’, but no longer as a photographer. His later publications were to include Wisbech directories (BW).

BALL & Co

85 Regent Road, Cambridge
SC1913, SC1914, SC1915, SC1916/17, SC1919/20

See also E S Ball, below.

BALL, Edward Speare

57 Regent Street, Cambridge
KC1900, SC1901, TC1901

85 Regent Street, Cambridge
KC1904, SC1904, SC1907, KC1908, CAD1909/10, KC1912, KC1916, AC1916

CAD1909/10 adds in brackets after the name: ‘Starr & Rignell’ (both q.v.). But later directory entries suggest that any take-over or sharing of premises was temporary. AS1916 lists ‘E S Ball & Co., Regent Studio, 85 Regent Street’.

BALL, F C

266 Mill Road, Cambridge
SC1907, SC1910, SC1911

BARRETT, Miss E R

Victoria Street, Cambridge
KC1916

19a Victoria Street, Cambridge
SC1916/17

BASÈBÉ, Mason &

19 & 20 Market Street, Cambridge
SC1901, SC1904, CAD1909/10

20 Market Street, Cambridge
KC1904

CAD1909/10 replaces Basèbé’s acute accent with a second grave accent, but this seems insufficient reason for listing it separately as a variant spelling. The mount of a cabinet print names Mason & Basebe, using no accents at all. (See also Basevi.)

BASEVI, Mason &

19 & 20 Market Street, Cambridge
SC1907, SC1910, AC1916

See also Basèbé.

BEALES, George

BIRD, Vernon

Station Road, March
KC1908

BIRD, William Henry Vernon

Alexandra Road, Wisbech
KC1904

He may be the same as Vernon Bird, above.

BLANCHARD, Valentine, & Lunn

Blanchard’s partnership in the late 1880s with Colin Lunn (q.v.) is mentioned by Reeve. A carte, probably from the 90s, shows the firm of Valentine Blanchard & Lunn at 15 Hills Road and Post Office Terrace, Cambridge.

BLANCHARD, Valentine

Lynn Road, Wisbech
K1883

Post Office Terrace, Cambridge
SC1887, KC1888

There were, in fact, two Valentine Blanchards. The first (and more eminent) was born and brought up in Wisbech, where he made his first experiments in photography, and where he practised briefly in 1859. He later retired to Cambridge. But almost all his life as a professional photographer was conducted from a London studio. More information about him appears as a separate studio note.

The second Valentine Blanchard, nephew of the first, was born in King’s Lynn in about 1860. The 1881 census shows him as a photographer at 107 Norfolk Street, King’s Lynn, but no record of this studio has been found in trade directories. He subsequently ran businesses in Wisbech and Cambridge, as listed above. ‘The Photographic News’ reported his introduction of electric lighting to his Cambridge premises in 1887. His must, therefore, have been one of the first electric studios in the country.

See also Blanchard & Lunn, above. (Additional studio notes: Post Office Terrace and 96 Lynn Road)

BLISS, John E

Post Office Terrace, Cambridge
SC1878, SC1881

75 St Andrew's Street, Cambridge
SC1881

7 St Andrew's Street, Cambridge
KC1883, SC1884

Bliss is described in SC1878 as ‘successor to A Nichol’, and a carte mount from (apparently) the 1880s names ‘J E Bliss, late Arthur Nicholls’, with the address: Fancy Goods Stores, 7 St Andrew's Street and Post Office Terrace, Cambridge. Such a combination of addresses would seem possible between 1881 & 1883 – unless ‘75’ in SC1881 is a misprint for ‘7’. In fact, the Post Office Terrace and 7 St Andrews Street premises were only yards apart. By 1887 the Post Office terrace studio was occupied by Valentine Blanchard (q.v.). (Post Office Terrace)

BLOMFIELD, Alfred

A Cambridge photographer, aged 39, who (according to 'The Essex Herald', 25th October 1887) was tried in Essex for failing to produce photographs for which he had been paid. He was found not guilty.

BOLTON, Mrs Martha

Fore Hill, Ely
CE1888, KC1892, KC1896, KC1900, KC1904

Cartes from the late 80s and the 90s, bearing the name ‘M Bolton, Fore Hill, Ely’, appear to come from Mrs Bolton's studio.

BOLTON, M & T

Fore Hill, Ely

BOLTON, Samuel

BOROUGH STUDIO

See Studio Note.

BOWSER, Henry

Lynn Road, Wisbech
KC1879

Bowser was previously connected, according to Golding, with the Beales & Kennerell partnership at 8 & 9 High Street, Wisbech.

BRADLEY, W

Newnham, Ely
MAC1866, MAC1867

See also William Bradley, below

BRADLEY, William

Fore Hill, Ely
KC1879

Whilst he could be the same as W Bradley, above, the twelve-year gap suggests the possibility of two different practitioners.

BROWN John L

North End, Wisbech
TC1901

7 York Row, Wisbech
KC1904, LW1911

Broad Street, March
KC1916

TC1901 adds 'collotyper (sic) process dealer'. KC1916 lists ‘J L Brown & Co’. Brown was generally known by his second name, Lawrence. Golding makes it clear that the one photographer accounts for the whole group of three ‘Brown’ entries. His 1908 partner, Lilian Ream (q.v.) had worked for John Kennerell(q.v.), from whom Brown bought the business. (See also Studio Notes: Borough Studio and Lilian Ream.)

BROWN & Co

9 York Row, Wisbech
KC1912, KC1916

7 York Row, Wisbech

KC1904, KC1908, KC1912

CAMBRIDGE, R O

115 Mill Road, Cambridge
SC1907, KC1908

40 Mill Road, Cambridge
CAD1909/10, SC1910, SC1911, AC1916

52 Mill Road, Cambridge
SC1912, SC1913, SC1914, SC1915, KC1916, SC1916/17, SC1919/20

AC1916 is not the only time that an Aubrey directory is suspected of using out-of-date information.

CLARKE, John Palmer

Post Office Terrace, Cambridge
SC1895, KC1896, SC1898, KC1900, SC1901, SC1904, SC1907, AD1909/10, SC1910, SC1911, SC1912, SC1913, SC1914, SC1916/17, SC1919/20

Clarke had worked for a number of years in Bury St Edmunds before settling in Cambridge, and he seems, for a period around the turn of the century, to have maintained studios in both towns. For his earlier career, see the Suffolk Directory. He (or a son of the same name?) continued at Post Office Terrace, Cambridge, until 1933. Some photographs in Reeve are attributed to his firm, but may have been from negatives inherited from earlier practitioners at the address. (Post Office Terrace)

CLARKE, P J

Post Office Terrace, Cambridge
TC1901

This may well be J P Clarke (above) with his initials transposed. (TC1901 is not free from errors.)

CLARKE, William

High Street, Chatteris
KC1858

CLENNERT, E

10 Willow Walk, Cambridge
AC1916

But see also Clennett, for which this appears to be a misspelling.

CLENNETT, Ernest C

21 Lower Park Street, Cambridge
SC1887

Clennett, 10 Willow Walk, Cambridge
SC1895, KC1896, SC1898, KC1900, SC1901, SC1904, KC1904, SC1907, KC1908, CAD1909/10

10 Portugal Street, Cambridge
SC1910, SC1911

COATES, H & Sons

According to Fosbrook-Ream they were trading under the name of Imperial Photo Company at 50 Market Place, Wisbech, at around the time of the First World War. Lilian Ream acquired their studio business at or soon after the end of the war, but they continued to operate as postcard publishers.

COOK, Arthur Walter

Market Street, Ely
MOC1865/6, MAC1866, MAC1867, KC1875

COOKE, Henry John

Market Street, Ely
KC1858, KC1869, HC1873

COOPER, T R

Swaffham Prior
KC1916

COX, William

Park Street, Chatteris
KC1879

CRADDOCK, Thomas

A friend of Samuel Smith (q.v.) and a calotype photographer in the Wisbech area, active during the 1850s. He is believed, though, to have been primarily an architectural photographer.

CRISP, A W & Co

16 King's Parade, Cambridge
SC1913, SC1914, SC1915, SC1916/17, SC1919/20

CROWSON, J

Market Place, Whittlesey
AC1916
